- Introduction
- Commitment to achieving Net Zero. Mainstream Training Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions (compared to 1990 levels) in the UK by 2050.
-
- Baseline Emissions Footprint. Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and are produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.
- Scope 1, 2 & 3 Emissions
- The image below summarises the key elements captured by scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
-
-
-
Scope 1 – Direct GHG emissions Includes emissions from activities owned or controlled by Mainstream that release omissions into the atmosphere. Examples of our emissions reported in Scope 1 are fuel (diesel and petrol) and natural gas.
-
Scope 2 – Energy indirect emissions Includes emissions from own consumption of purchased electricity, heat, steam and cooling. These are a consequence of the company’s activities but are from sources not owned/controlled. The use of electricity is being reported in Scope 2.
-
Scope 3 – Other indirect emissions Emissions that are as a consequence of our actions, but the source is not owned or controlled, and which are not classed as scope 2 emissions. Examples of emissions that we are reporting on in Scope 3
include grid losses, electricity generation, water supply, water treatment, homeworking and hotel accommodation.
- Baselines

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.
|
This is our first reporting year. The 2022 baseline data includes Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and six measurable areas under Scope 3.

- Emissions reduction targets
- In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.
-
- We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years by 400 tCO2e by 2028 per annum. This is a reduction of 21.19% and demonstrates our commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050
-
- Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:
- Carbon Reduction Projects
Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
-
- Changes to the organisation, and attitudes within, have seen Mainstream Training reduce its carbon emissions by 304.36 tCO2e between the 2022/23 baseline reporting year and the first reporting year (2023/24). The board of directors have chosen not to invest in offsetting any carbon this year and are instead focusing on reducing emissions at source.
-
- In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:
-
-
- Our 5-year plan contains initiatives to reduce CO2e emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3, in addition to measures to improve the accuracy of our emissions reporting and forecasting.
These include:
-
-
- Running a pilot to see the useability and viability of exchanging the existing engine and drivetrain with the electric equivalent. This will include refurbishing the truck rather than replacing it.
- Provision of driver training in respect of fuel efficiency and the monitoring of driver performance in respect of mpg. This will incorporate aspects of Safe and Fuel- Efficient Driving (SAFED) training.
- Investment in alternative methods of training which are less environmentally damaging e.g., virtual training simulation systems.
- Testing and eventual implementation of equipment aimed at reducing reaction times. Using eye training to strengthen driver visual acuity, object tracking, peripheral vision, and reaction speed are being tested with aims to reduce most common test failures and thus training time.
- Investigation of alternative fuel sources such as biodiesel.
Carbon Neutral Status
-
- To achieve carbon neutral status by 2050 Mainstream Training will reduce, or offset, its Scope 1, 2 and scope 3 emissions equating to 1887.90 tCO2e. Between calculating the 2022/23 baseline year and the first reporting year’s figures, Mainstream Training have reduced gross fossil fuel emissions by 304.36 tCO2e. Net emissions have fallen by
104.36 tCO2e due to the decision to offset 200 tCO2e in the baseline reporting year. Mainstream Training is on track for its 2028 target of reducing emissions (from the baseline reporting year) by 400 tCO2e per annum.
- Additional Notes
- Review of this Carbon Reduction Plan (COR014) and Sustainable Development Policy (COR609) was brought forward by the Directors because this Carbon Reduction Plan is based on year 1 baselines which rely on emission calculations which include Mainstream House, Sittingbourne, Kent. Given that location is no longer occupied, Directors have decided to extend the review date of the Carbon Reduction Plan to November 2024 at which point there will be one year baseline data available from the Kings Row site. Both the Carbon Reduction Plan and this Sustainable Development Policy will be reviewed jointly and combined in November 2024.
- Declaration
- This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans1.
-
- Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard2 and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting3.
-
- This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors.
